Project Title: “Replicating Gandhi Through Gandhi’s Ideologies”

Abstract in 400 words: Gandhiji wrote ‘My Life,My Message’.This message shows Gandhiji in the light of experiments and researches done by him, by applying the various philosophical and religious ideologies in his own life.In this sense Gandhi himself was an action researcher.The ashram established by him to transform the youths ,to prepare for implementation and use of his two arms Truth and Non-Violence is witness to this fact that only after prior training and preparation,one can use these arms in his life.He described himself as, “  ---humble searcher after Truth, knows his limitations,makes mistakes,never hesitates to admit them when he makes them and frankly confesses that he,like a scientist, is making experiments about some “of the eternal veraities” of life, but cannot even claim to be a scientist because he can show no tangible proof of scientific accuracy in his methods or such tangible results of his experiments as modern science demands.”                                                                                                  Young India,May 12,1920.    

The above statement made by Gandhi speaks volumes about the limitations faced by any action research work regarding philosophy.But impact of his experiments has been acknowledged by the world.So, we can have the hypothesis of transforming the juvenile delinquents,who serve  temporary imprisonment and come back in the society and are the probable threats for the society,if not transformed properly.There is every possibility of their committing the crime,whenever they will get the chance.So, to actualize the divinity which lies in them in potential form through the ideologies of Gandhi, will be the motto of this action research.Gandhi said that , ‘hate the sin,not the sinner’.So, one action of sin can be replaced by another action of benevolence, and the sinner will be turned into saint, like Valmiki and Angulimar.

Introduction: Indian P M Narendra Modi asked for the observance of International Yoga Day and it was accepted and acclaimed by the world.It means world has accepted the power of yoga and spirituality the seed of which was sown by Gandhiji in the form of his two arms and armaments Truth and Non-Violence.Being disconnected from our Spiritual source , we will be lacking our strength and courage.Observing non-violence in every form i.e. physical,mental and oral has been preached by Gandhiji and all the other philosophies and religions.He wrote that , “Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind.”Thus,finding out the cause of violence will solve the problem.To uproot the cause of violence will be the main purpose of this project.To adhere to truth without taking recourse to violence is the method called by Gandhiji as ‘Satyagraha’.He told the world not to hate the sinner but the sin.So, without hating any British he opposed their system with full modesty to which he called ‘Civil Disobedience.’ Being impressed by ‘Unto This Last’ of Ruskin, he propounded the concept of ‘Sarvodaya.’ Gender equality was the another concept given by him, on the basis of its metaphysical source.Concept of ‘Trusteeship’ was also based on the verse written in the Ishavasyopanishad which preaches us to live in this world with a sense of detachment, because nothing belongs to us ,and is given by the God and don’t envy others resources.In nutshell, we can say that his whole philosophy revolves around the concept of Truth and the only medium to realize this Truth is non-violence.So, non-violence is the cardinal virtue of which all the other virtues are offshoots. Love is the another virtue which unites people.He wrote that, we can conquer the world by truth and love.Control of thought,word and deed is brahmacharya i.e. a perennial spring of Eternal Energy.’And selfless service leads to salvation.So, this investigator wants to liberate through this service to humanity though not the selfless one because of the grant available for this.

Research Problem:The world which was seething with the problem of violence has started burning.Everywhere there is violence in the world.And violence is being suppressed by violence,that is the irony.It is like fuelling the fire.The main medium of this violence are the youths of this world.Gandhi sought after the contribution of youth’s in peace and conflict resolution.These youths,who are misled and deviated from their paths are the main source of violence.So, the main problem is – how to rein in these youths from getting involved in destructive works and get them involved in contructive works,so that their energy can be utilized for the welfare of the society.

Research Objectives: Transforming them through Gandhi’s ideologies is the only option for the society.The specimen for this will be presented by this work in which a group of juvenile delinquents will be chosen to transform.Gandhiji believed in the change of heart.But change of heart is possible for those persons whose subliminal impressions are not so bad and merely education will work for them.But for radical transformation of any criminal,it is necessary to keep him in controlled environment and under observation upto at least six months.For this work the juvenile jail of GTB Nagar will be chosen and mainly those juveniles who have shown some symptoms of aggression and violence in the recent past will be selected to treat them through the holistic treatment ,like pure sattvike food,meditation,spiritual teachings ,devotional songs to soothe their minds.They will be shown inspirational encouraging movies,morning walk and prayer will be must for them.Thus,an effort will be done to delete their sublimlnal bad impressions and rewrite their genes by good impressions,so that they can get rid of their bad memories and see themselves in the new light of possibilities and hope be filled with enthusiasm.By making them realize their potentialities, they can be encouraged to transform themselves and the world around,also.Sometimes skewed development is the cause of violence.Getting involved them in creative activities will be the best option to tap their energy which they are dissipating through violence.Once they will find enjoyment in life,they will be encouraged to perform more. Gandhiji said that ‘divinity is also in beasts but in dormant form.’Now the main goal of the investigator will be to arouse that dormant divinity in them to make them realize their real nature.    

Relevance in the context of Gandhian Philosophy:

Relevance in the context of contemporary discourses:Global terrorism is the buzzword which is frequently used by the leaders of the globe.And almost all the countries are finding themselves helpless to fight with this demon which is continuously growing like Raktbeej who got multiplied by every drop of the blood.Weapons will fall short before their adventure when they are not afraid of even dying.Suicide-bombers are the best examples of this kind of threat.So, to wash their brain ,which has been poisoned by wrong preachings is the first necessary step to be taken by the world.Bullets or pellets wouldn’ work.Those ideas instilled  in their brain,need to be deleted and new software full of the feeling of love and compassion should be written.Once their brain will stop giving them wrong information ,they will desist from doing misdeeds.To awaken their inner conscience and make them listen its voice is necessary to transform them.For this it is necessary for them to become introvert,meditate on themselves,continuously and get involved in right kind of thinking.

So, through this action research work, it will be proved that radical transformation of even criminals is also possible.

Short Review of Literature:The investigator got the inspiration to perform this work after reading Gandhiji thoroughly.Further, experiences of her own life are much more similar to Gandhiji’s which worked wonder to take this initiative to perform this Herculian task.Spirituality is the only means through which even miracles may happen.Saint Terresa’s life is the best example of this.Gandhiji has written that Divine Voice used to give him instructions to which he followed with faith.So,faith is the necessary factor to make things work.His autobiography ‘My Experiments With Truth’and ‘Collected Works of Gandhi’ etc prove this fact that continuously he was being monitored by the Divine within which is called ‘Spirit Guide’.

He wrote, ‘I can say this that not the unanimous verdict of the whole world against me could shake me from the belief that what I heard was the true Voice of God….For the Voice was more real than my existence.’

It is not the case which happened only with Gandhiji but all the human beings of the world has got that Spirit Guide to show him the right path but the real problem is this that we are not lending the ear to it.As Gandhiji himself wrote, ‘The Divine Music’ is incessantly going within ourselves.But our loud senses drown the delicate music,which is unlike and infinitely superior to anything we can hear with our senses.” Along with this  “Still Small Voice”, Gandhiji spoke about “the Pillar of Fire” and the “Inner Light’. “When this Light corresponds with the promptings of the Inner Voice,” he says, “then that spark has the flash of inspiration.” This very divinity and inspiration has to be aroused in these misguided,maltreated juveniles,so that when they come back again in the society,they wouldn’ become threat for it.Chances of their indulgence in crimes is high,so it I better to rehabilitate them properly so that they can set an example for others like them that it is possible for them to lead a dignified and civilized life.At the same time ,much of governments resources which are being wasted in curbing them will be utilized for their education and welfare.All the philosophers of the world agree on this point that ignorance is the root cause of suffering.Just show them this Divine Light within and they will choose the right path themselves.Gandhiji’s concept of Ramrajya will be implemented only when these delinquents are transformed.

Research Methodology: As it is obvious from the above discussion that Divinity is immeasurable and transempirical.So, all the the norms of knowing and measurement are not applicable for it.But the impact It leaves on the character and activities of the agent is accepted worldwide,mainly in the case of Gandhiji.So, in this action research work also various methods will be used to assesss the impact of the interventions given to them from time to time.A regular visit and consultation will be done to see the impact of previous methods.And fining it ineffective another option will be used ,according to the necessity of the particular volunteer

For this purpose all the tools like – library ,computer and software, techniques of measurement,statistics and the human mind will be used.

They will be given cassettes of devotional music and mantras to listen and chant which will obviously purify their mind and make them fearless enough to accept the truth.As Gandhiji has written that chanting the name of Ram gave him immense strength.

They will be shown inspirational movies with a message behind it to change the pattern of their thinking.As it was the case with Gandhiji that the drama which he saw in the early childhood about Harishchandra had its impact on him throughout his life. The input we are having through various resources comes as output in various forms.So, it is necessary to have good kind of knowledge.

It will be taken care of that they are having pure sattavic food and not exposed to any kind of addiction.

They will be kept away from other inmates so that it will be easy to differentiate between them and other inmates who has not been given this special kind of treatment.

If positive result will be found then it will be implemented on the all the inmates to get result on larger scale.

Further,it has been found effective in the case of adult criminals of Tihar jail ,in which it was applied by Dr.Kiran Bedi.

Treating them lovingly and affectionately will arouse the soft feelings latent in them and make them soft hearted instead of hardened one,which they are at present.

They will be given the opportunity to vent their anger if there is any to purgate themselves and feel light hearted.

They will be taught the communication skills to express their views in the right manner and ask for justice if they were maltreated and indulged in retributive justice.

  Significance of the Study: If the investigator  will find the positive results then it will be applied on all the inmates of the jail and thus will be continuously used on the larger scale to make it prevalent in the whole society.Then, Plato’s Republic and Ramrajya of Gandhiji will be established.At present it may seem Utopian concept but Gandhi made it feasible in his own life and gave the message to the world that by adhering to Truth anybody can achieve his goal.

Expected Outcomes:History of India and particularly the life of Gandhiji is witness to this fact that radical changes may occur in the volunteers if they will observe the eleven vratas mentioned by Gandhiji, as rules of the ashram.Even the juvenile jail can be converted into the ashram and would- be heroes may come out of that instead of villains.The only limitation of this whole finding is this that it is for the six months duration and chances are there that they may relapse to their prior condition.So, there must be some further course of action to observe them and if even slight change in their behaviuor is found then it must be rectified.

Duration of the Research Project: 6 months

Tentative Work Plan:This action research,which is supposed to be finished within six months duration,will be done in six instalments.

1.    Its first instalment will be done for purgation of the juveniles.Because till youdon’t empty any utencil filled with mud, you cannot fill it with pure,clean water.Deletion of the past subliminal impressions is necessary to write something new.Any guru gives Deeksha before Shiksha.

2.    In the second instalment, they will be told about cardinal moral values and apply in their life.For example, to tell truth and remain non-violent.Also,they will be told to observe Brahmacharya.

3.    If they will become controlled,then will be told about the importance of love which will unite them with each other and their sense of alienation will be gone.It is obvious that being united with each other they will feel strength to take any positive intiative for other inmates.They will be told to love all the other inmates of the jail.Thus,they will be told to broaden their horizon and embrace humanity in general.

4.    If they will start showing positive symptoms then they will given some education about the society of which they are a part.After understanding the structure of the society they will be able to behave according to the social norms.

5.    Fifth step will be about their grooming for their life after imprisonment ,so that they will not indulge in crime again.Without any future plan they will be directionless.So, according to their inclination,a plan for their future life will be charted out.

6.    After having a vision of life they will be hopeful about their future which will give them strength to live in the society with dignity.Proper arrangement of their rehabilitation will be done through NGOs.All the facilities available to deprived children will be provided to them so that they may live on their own.

7.    For this purpose they will have to change their life style,eating habits,read good inspirational books,watch movies with ethical values, listen devotional music which will soothe their mind.They will be provided all these facilities.If they will stick to the rules then they will be given prize which will encourage then to act in better manner and other inmates who will be deprived of all these things will be attracted towards them and follow their suit.This will proliferate the inspiration in all of them,which is the purpose of this project ,  “Replicate Gandhi Through Gandhi’s Ideology.”

8.    The only regret in this project will be this that their wouldn’ be any provision of monitoring them after the term of the project,which can spoil the whole effort.Chances will be their that they will relapse to their prior condition.

7.    For this purpose they will have to change their life style,eating habits,read good inspirational books,watch movies with ethical values, listen devotional music which will soothe their mind.They will be provided all these facilities.If they will stick to the rules then they will be given prize which will encourage then to act in better manner and other inmates who will be deprived of all these things will be attracted towards them and follow their suit.This will proliferate the inspiration in all of them,which is the purpose of this project ,  “Replicate Gandhi Through Gandhi’s Ideology.”

8.    The only regret in this project will be this that their wouldn’ be any provision of monitoring them after the term of the project,which can spoil the whole effort.Chances will be their that they will relapse to their prior condition.
